Irishman Pat Falvey is attempting the trek between Ward Hunt and the North Pole with two companions, Dr Clare O'Leary and John Dowd, both of whom are also Irish.

The trio will be heading for the North Pole from Ellesmere Island in Canada's Far North and will receive fresh supplies along their route, but otherwise will be making their journey without any other outside assistance (such as traction kites or dogs).

For both Pat Falvey and Clare O'Leary, this adventure will see the completion of their quest to reach all three poles, as they have both already conquered the summit of Everest and reached the South Pole. For John Dowd, though, it will only be part two of the adventurer's holy grail: he has already climbed Everest, but has not yet had the opportunity and privilege of travelling to the South Pole. It will also be his first long expedition on skis.
