We have already said that the way in which the expedition communicates makes it relatively hard to get a clear idea of what's happening on the ground.
In any case it seems that the weather is cold where they are at this time because they're having to thump each other in order to prevent the possible onset of frostbite, which isn't always necessarily spotted in time. And that they want to get to the coast quickly!
