Asle T. Johansen together with two other Norwegians celebrate not only the Amundsen Centenary but also the 150th anniversary of the Fridtjof Nansen's birth. They'll use period clothing and equipment.

2011 is quite a year for the Norwegians : the gouvernment has decided to celebrate two of their legendary heroes, Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen, creating the Nansen/Amundsen Year with so many events related to the poles and to both heroes that one can hardly list them.

One may remember nevertheless that Norwegian adventurer Asle Johansen crossed Greenland in 1988, one hundred years after Nansen, using period clothing and equipment.

This year, Johansen will celebrate the Amundsen Centenary in a similar fashion, with teammates Agnar Berg and Gaute Grindhaug.

The three Norwegians will follow Amundsen's Axel Heiberg route from the Ross Ice Shelf to the South Pole using replica clothing and equipment to better understand Amundsen's journey.

Here are the members of the party :

  • Asle T. Johansen : a physician and researcher specializing in the body's response to extreme physical and mental stress, emphasizes that this is not just a replica expedition, but a scientific journey. He has already cycled an around the world tour in 80 days.
  • Jan Ertsas Morten : he has crosses Greenland twice. The firsst time, in 1986, he was with Borge Ousland and Agnar Berg. And two years later, he crossed then island together with Asle T. Johansen, Berg Agnar and Nose Roar.
  • Gaute Grindhaug : civil engineer working for the the norwegian government. He has a great experience of the outdoor and love to go skying and camping in the wild.

Note : their website is in Norwegian only.
