Todd has made it !

Published on 22.12.2008 - Expedition Earth

Here are some extracts from the update Brian Hart published on December 21st regarding the arrival of Todd Carmichael at the pole.

Brian Hart wrote : "I received word this evening from the team at Patriot Hills camp that Todd has become the first American to travel the 600 nautical miles from the edge of Antarctica to the South Pole...alone, unassisted and unsupported.

Our suspicions about the lack of contact from Todd these last few days turned out to be true: his backup sat phone had also failed. He was relying solely on his hand-crafted charging system for the satellite tracking device to communicate his position to the outside world (see the posting for day 28).

I did not speak to Todd directly so news regarding his attempt to also set the speed record for this journey will have to wait. Whatever the outcome, it will certainly be incredibly tight. That it is even close is testimony to both Todd's huge rally after a difficult start and to the magnitude of the current record set by the incomparable Hannah McKeand."
