Last year, Todd Carmichael made an unsuccessful attempt on the trek between Hercules Inlet and the South Pole, accompanied by Jason de Carteret. This time around, although he is tackling the same route, he will be doing it solo and with the help of a little more advertising.

This will be his third polar adventure. First of all, in 2004, he completed the ‘last degree' outing. Then ,last year, he attempted the route from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole with de Carteret. The pair had to abandon their bid after 24 days due to the appalling weather conditions and an injury to de Carteret.

This time, Carmichael will be setting out on his own and is already talking of an adventure€“ if he is successful€“ that will make history! He intends following in the footsteps of his predecessors (the first intrepid polar pioneers) and raising the American flag at the South Pole!

He also aims to become the first American to achieve this feat (which has become one of the classic treks) in under 38 days.
