Wayne Davidson (Arctic environment weather specilaist) writes : "Since 1998, the ice of the Arctic Ocean has got appreciably thinner, especially visually and especially gradually with every passing year. Since 1985, when I started to observe it, this ice has changed a great deal and is no longer recognizable. ..."

  • Excerpts from their diary :
  • After each diving session, the material had to be carefully checked up. While the other ones are preparing the evening meal, Bardout and Poyelle at work.
  • April 24th : Ghilslain Bardout and his colleagues of the Deepsea under the pole.com expedition are gradually begin to realise that their progress is too slow for them to think of reaching Ward Hunt and the Canadian shore. So they will have to be recovered.
  • April 30st : Ghislain Bardout and his partners in crime have decided that the adventure would be shorter than planned. The icecap is too dislocated to envisage continuing and getting themselves picked up at a later date. So the pick-up has to be organised. But with which plane?

  • From their logbook (on April 17th, from Bardout's writing) :
  • The decison of being air lifted has been taken some days ago : the ice pack is too chaotic this year and too broken into thousands of lead everywhere. It was impossible to progress as fast as foreseen int the beginning of the adventure.
  • The air operation to collect Ghislain Bardout's team appears to be far from straightforward. And as the pilots at Ken Borek's company continue to analyse the situation, the members of Bardout's expedition continue to dive beneath the ice.
  • So while the team is awaiting the Ken Borek air planes, Bardout has decided to carryn on with the diving. Every day, the start a new session. And find new unbelievable submarine landscapes.
  • In the meantime also, Bardout takes the opportunity of being forced not to move for drawing everyone's attention to the trend of the icecap this year.

  • Meanwhile, the men on the diving expedition are making the most of their final hours on the ice to complete a few more dives. In all, they will have made 50 dives and reached a maximum depth of 35 metres.
  • Up until Saturday (May 9th 2010), they had been out on the sea-ice for 44 days, having covered a distance of 166 kilometres since being dropped off in the vicinity of the North Pole. They are currently 231 kilometres from the Pole itself..
  • 9 May : The operation to pick up Ghislain Bardout's team all went according to plan. It was with no particular hitches and a great deal of nostalgia that the 8 participants of Deep Sea Under The Pole finally took their leave of the environment that have held them in thrall for so long.
  • 11 May : At around 4 pm, the Twin Otter arrived in the area, touching down safely after flying over the landing strip a number of times. The strip had been marked out as clearly as possible using the waterproof bags that contained the expedition's rations.
